As a luxury travel advisor, I’m always seeking out ways to elevate my clients’ travels. I do this primarily through providing authentic, “can’t-book-it-yourself” experiences and behind-the-scenes access to incredible cultural institutions. But of course, where you stay on vacation can influence how luxurious your journey will be.
But do you always need to opt for five-star properties to enjoy a pampering experience? Well, it depends; here’s how I break it down for my travel clients:
Why you would want to go five-star
The biggest difference you’ll experience at the five-star level is in the service and amenities you receive. In addition to discreet and personal service from a staff trained to anticipate your needs, you can generally expect more amenities at a five-star property–which may include valet parking, pools, and robust spa and salon services. If you’ll use those amenities liberally, then five-star may be the way to go.
Another consideration? Ambiance. If you’re craving an ornate, designed-to-the-nines stay—think marble staircases, gilded touches, and crystal chandeliers—you’ll most likely find that at a five-star property. Many of the most renowned hotels in the world, like the Hotel Ritz Paris or Waldorf Astoria New York, are five-star properties. Five-star stays also tend to come from reputable, long-established brands, so there is a greater chance that the level of service will be up to par no matter where in the world you check in.
Why you might not need—or want—a five-star stay
Sometimes you’re craving over-the-top opulence—and sometimes you want a more homey and comfortable stay. You’re far more likely to find that at a four-star property. At this level, you’ll also tend to find options that offer a stronger sense of place than a five-star can provide; the downside to being a part of a five-star brand is that a property may end up looking like it could be plopped down anywhere in the world. Your stay may feel more destination-specific when you opt for a more intimate, boutique or even family-run property.
And if you plan to be out and about for most of the day, a five-star stay might just be overkill. Since you won’t be taking much advantage of the property’s amenities, you can choose a four-star stay and spend the difference on a once-in-a-lifetime experience instead.
How to know when to go four- or five-star
Here’s the insider “secret” I share with my clients to help them choose the right accommodations when traveling abroad. If you’re used to checking into a three-star hotel in the U.S., choose four-star abroad. If you’re used to checking into a four-star in the U.S., choose five-star when abroad.
This is because the “star” system doesn’t directly translate from here to other destinations. While a four-star hotel in the U.S. could lead to a very fine stay, that’s not what four-star indicates elsewhere—particularly in Europe. Generally, four-star in Europe and beyond means you can expect to enjoy a comfortable stay with “basic” amenities and services, like an elevator for guest use and a staffed concierge desk. You might not get many bells and whistles beyond that.
You never want to feel like you’re downgrading the level of service you’re used to when you’re on vacation—so use this star “translation” system to ensure you won’t be in for any disappointments when you check in.
